CULINARY STUDENT RECIPE CHALLENGE featuring U.S. RICE
RULES AND REGULATIONS

“USA Rice Federation’s Culinary Student Recipe Challenge Featuring U.S. Rice” is sponsored by the USA Rice Federation (the “Sponsor”). No purchase is necessary to enter the contest. Entrants must be enrolled in a full-time culinary arts program at a recognized Canadian culinary school for the 2011 – 2012 academic year. Recipe submissions can only be entered online at www.riceinfo.com. Entrants must submit an original recipe with their entry and complete all requested information on the entry form including: name, full postal address (city and province), phone number and e-mail address. When completed, click the submit button and your entry will be entered. Multiple entries are encouraged but each entry must contain a recipe submission that has not already been submitted.
To enter and be eligible to win, a person must be a resident of Canada (excluding Quebec) who is 19 years or older, and who is not an employee of, or domiciled with an employee of any of the following: USA Rice Federation or Faye Clack Communications Inc.

One Grand prize winner will receive $1,500.00.

A second prize winner will receive $500.00.

A third prize winner will receive $250.00.

Each recipe must be an original creation of the entrant (an original creation is defined as a recipe that has been created by the entrant without the input of any other person and/or one that has not been copied in whole or in part from any other source – e.g. cookbook, magazine). The winning entrants will be required to state in a release that their recipe is their original creation, that they are the sole author of the recipe and that it has not been copied in whole or in part from any other source.

All recipe submissions must follow the criteria listed below:

Recipe name

  • Must contain the appropriate name of the dish

Ingredients

  • Recipe must include two U.S. rice varieties e.g., short grain white and long grain white and a minimum of 1 cup (250 mL) of cooked rice per recipe. Rice must be of U.S. origin.
  • Must use ingredients that are easily found at a major grocery store.
  • Ingredients must not exceed a value of $20.00 for four servings.
  • All measurements are to be listed in imperial units followed by metric units in brackets e.g., 1tbsp (25mL)
  • Recipes must have a superior taste profile, however easy for a consumer to recreate.
  • Recipes must showcase creative use of U.S. rice and highlight the versatility of the grain.

Cooking instructions/method

  • The instructions/method should be clearly defined and listed in chronological order of preparation

Total prep and cook times

  • Must take less than 1 hour for preparation and cooking combined

Serving size

  • List the number of servings the recipes makes e.g. makes 4 servings

The contest begins on September 12, 2011 at 00:00:01 ET. and ends on December 9, 2011 at 16:00:00 ET. Entries received will be assessed based upon the above criteria and a short list will be created. A recipe tasting will be conducted by members of the USA Rice Federation and a Certified Chef de Cuisine (C.C.C.). Judging criteria during the tasting will be based on the recipe’s taste profile and creative use of U.S. rice. Finalists will be announced on December 21, 2011 and will be advised of their having been selected as a finalist by e-mail at the address stated on their entry form. Finalists will compete for the winning title in Toronto, Canada in March 2012 (date TBD).

Finalists will receive a paid trip to Toronto, Canada consisting of economy airfare on an airline selected by sponsor, two nights’ hotel accommodation at a hotel selected by the contest sponsor, cab fare to and from the airport, cab fare to and from the event venue and a food per diem of $55.00. Other expenses are the responsibility of each finalist. If a selected Finalist resides close to Toronto such that air is not available to Toronto, then airline tickets will not form part of the trip and the person must pay their own transportation costs to the hotel in Toronto.

The USA Rice Federation will cover the cost of the food on the day of the final competition only. The USA Rice Federation will not cover food costs involved in the entry or preparation phases of this contest or other related costs.

All food required for the judging event will be provided by the USA Rice Federation. No other food items will be allowed to be brought in. Failure to adhere to this will result in disqualification from the competition.

Finalists will have 1 hour to prepare their recipe for judges.

The day of the competition, finalists must wear a standard chef jacket, chef pants and chef hat, which the finalists themselves must provide at their own costs.

The day of the competition, kitchen equipment will be supplied by the USA Rice Federation to include serving plates.

Judging panelists with select finalists’ recipes on the day of the final competition based upon: taste profile, creativity, presentation and inventive use of rice.

General rules:

To be declared a Finalist or a winner, the selected entrants must sign a release and return sponsor’s release within 21 days of it having been sent to them stating: (i) they are in compliance with and confirming that they agree to the contest rules, that they are the sole author of the recipe and that the recipe is their own original creation, that no other person assisted them in the authorship of the recipe and that they assign to the Sponsor all intellectual property including copyright in the recipe, and as a result thereof the Sponsor may use their winning recipe in any vehicle they desire including without limitation in a recipe book published by or on behalf of the Sponsor, that they waive all moral rights that they have in the recipe and that they agree that the Sponsor including its agents and representatives may make changes to the recipe as the Sponsor at its sole discretion may determine without the winner’s approval (iii) that they consent to the use without compensation of their photograph, name and city of residence in all publicity campaigns related to the contest and (iv) they release the contest sponsor from all liability related to their participating in the contest.

By entering the contest, entrants agree to abide by the Contest Rules and the decisions of the judging panel, which are final. By entering the contest, winners agree to the use of their name, address (city only), comments, voice and images for publicity purposes by the USA Rice Federation, without further compensation.

All entries become the property of the sponsor. Entries will be rejected if not fully completed. Persons tampering with or abusing the entry policy will be disqualified.

The prize must be accepted as awarded and in the winner’s name, prizes are not transferable.

No correspondence will be entered into except with potential winners. The decision of the judges and their representatives with respect to any matter related to this contest (either before or following selection) is final and without appeal.

Sponsor including its agents, representatives and those associated with them, are not responsible for any entry, the prize winning notification or the claim for any prize sent by a winner, which is lost, misdirected or which arrives late, as the case may be, whether or not due to the fault of the foregoing or of any other person.

Entries will be rejected if not fully completed. The Sponsor, including its agents, representatives and those associated with them, are not responsible for any entry, a prize winning notification or the claim for prize, which fails to get entered, is lost, misdirected or which arrives late, as the case may be, whether or not due to the fault of the Sponsor or of any other person or thing and whether or not due to an interrupted or unavailable browser or network server or malfunction, congestion, incompatibility, misconnection or miscommunication, failed or lost computer transmissions, or if the Sponsor’s Email/Web site portal is compromised by virus, bugs, unauthorized human or unauthorized non-human intervention, or for any technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer on line systems, servers access providers, computer equipment, software failures, or failure of any entry to be received due to technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or Sponsor’s web site or other similar technical problems beyond the reasonable control of the Sponsor (collectively, the “technical problems”). The Sponsor reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify, amend or suspend the email portion of the contest, in its sole discretion, if any of the foregoing technical problems prevents the fair or proper administration of the contest and if Sponsor does so, in the sole discretion of the Sponsor, and conduct the contest that includes those valid on-line entries previously received during the contest period plus all postal entries received. The Contest Sponsor will have no liability whatsoever if for any reason the email portion of the contest is not capable of running as planned due to technical problems, including due to computer virus, bugs, unauthorized tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes. The Contest Sponsor reserves their right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the contest or to be acting in violation of these rules or otherwise in a disruptive manner. Contest Sponsor shall not be held responsible for any errors or negligence that may arise or occur in connection with the contest including any damage to an entrant’s computer equipment, system, software or any combination thereof, as a result of their participation in this contest or from downloading any material from the contest website or elsewhere.

By completing the entry form all entrants consent to the collection, use and distribution of their personal information by the Contest Sponsor for the purposes of running the contest and as permitted by these rules (for example, pursuant to these rules, all entrants who accept a prize consent to the use of their personal information for publicity usages) including as permitted by any release signed. Personal information is defined as anything that identifies an entrant as an individual, such as home telephone number, age, home address, email address, gender. Contest Sponsor will not sell or transmit this information to third parties except for the purposes of administering the contest.
