Using an Instant Pot simplifies the rice-cooking process, ensuring perfectly cooked grains every time. Whether you’re new to pressure cooking or an experienced home chef, this guide will walk you through the steps to make fluffy and delicious rice with ease. From measuring the right water-to-rice ratio to adjusting for different types of rice, you’ll find all the tips and tricks you need to master this kitchen staple.
Using Instant Pot to Cook Rice
Ingredients:
- Rice: 1 cup (you can adjust the quantity as needed)
- Water: 1 to 1.25 cups (the amount varies slightly depending on the type of rice)
- Salt: 1/2 teaspoon (optional, for taste)
Instructions:
- Rinse the Rice:
- Place the rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse it under cold running water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.
- Measure the Water:
- For every 1 cup of rice, use between 1 to 1.25 cups of water. For most types of rice, 1 cup of water per cup of rice works well, but for a bit softer texture, use 1.25 cups of water. Adjust the water quantity based on your preference and the type of rice.
- Add Rice and Water to the Instant Pot:
- Transfer the rinsed rice to the Instant Pot. Add the measured water. If using, add salt at this stage.
- Set the Instant Pot:
- Close the lid and set the valve to the sealing position.
- Select the “Rice” setting if your Instant Pot has one. This automatic setting typically sets the cooking time to around 12 minutes at low pressure. (Note: Instant Pots don’t allow you to set a specific temperature; instead, you select a cooking program or manually set the pressure level and cooking time. For cooking rice, you typically use the “Rice” program or manually set the pressure level and time.)
- If your Instant Pot doesn’t have a “Rice” setting, use the “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” setting. Set the pressure to low and the cooking time to 12 minutes.
- Cook the Rice:
- Once the cooking time is complete, allow the Instant Pot to naturally release pressure for 10 minutes. (This means you do nothing and let the Instant Pot sit for 10 minutes after the cooking time ends.)
- After 10 minutes of natural release, carefully turn the valve to the venting position to release any remaining pressure.
- Fluff and Serve:
- Open the lid and fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains.
- Serve the rice hot as a side dish or use it in your favourite recipes.
Tips for Perfect Rice:
- Types of Rice: The water-to-rice ratio and cooking time might vary slightly for different types of rice. Here are some general guidelines:
- White Rice: 1 cup rice to 1 cup water, 12 minutes at low pressure
- Brown Rice: 1 cup rice to 1.25 cups water, 20-22 minutes at high pressure
- Basmati Rice: 1 cup rice to 1 cup water, 4-6 minutes at low pressure
- Jasmine Rice: 1 cup rice to 1 cup water, 4-6 minutes at low pressure
- Rice Texture: For a softer texture, use a bit more water. For firmer rice, use slightly less water.
- Seasoning: Feel free to add other seasonings or flavourings like butter, olive oil, or herbs to the water before cooking for additional flavour.
